Tropical Storm Lee - Update

Tropical Storm Lee formed in the waters off Louisiana on Friday, threatening a drenching along much of the Gulf Coast over the Labor Day weekend with up to 20 inches of rain in some spots. It appears that damages will be limited to flooding in low lying areas of Harrison and Hancock counties, but it also appears that Jackson county is also getting its share of rain and wind. Our CERT team has activated the call tree and is ready for shelters, if necessary.

Hands On Mississippi Promotes Early Literacy Skills for Children of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Gulfport, MS Saturday, April 16, 2011- With great anticipation Hands On Mississippi presents the first annual “Hands On Reading Party.” This annual event promotes a love of reading and engages the entire family in a fun afternoon of story-related art projects, literature readings, and a free copy of the book to take home and share.

Hands On has partnered with several businesses including Baria Law Firm, Ocean Springs Lumber, Sliver Slipper Casino, and Christ Episcopal Church, and with several community leaders to purchase over 100 copies of the featured book Click, Clack, Moo Cows Who Can Type to be given FREE to attendees at the Reading Parties.

Please join us 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 16^th at Barnes and Nobles in Gulfport, MS. Our guest reader is Megan Gray, GMM Anchor with WLOX. Come early to participate in our MOO-tastic art project and receive your FREE copy of the book.

Click, Clack, Moo is a 2001 Caldecott award winner. This book, already considered a classic children's tale, starts from the point of view of role reversals. Children take objects or animals and make them be like humans. The typing cows on a farm lead readers through an entertaining and educational journey.

For The National “Week of the Young Child” Hands On Mississippi is coordinating Reading Parties at several Child Care Centers and Libraries along the Gulf Coast the week of April 10th through the 16th. These parties will allow each child to hear the story and leave with a free copy to take home. We need your support in making these party a success! You can help by donating the cost of one reading party. Your generous donation of $350.00 will include the cost of 50 books at $7.00 a piece and a healthy snack during the party. The book of choice is Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by: Doreen Cronin. This book is a 2001 Caldecott Award Winner and is fun to read. This is a great price to invest in the future of the children along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Welcome to the new(ish) HOM website. We have been developing some neat features for launch this summer, but the times call for action. As such, we just today put up a volunteer registration form. Please go to "Engagement" to sign up as a volunteer and get listed with our office. There is a "Comments" section for you to tell us all about yourself, your interests, your skills, your questions, and so forth. Thanks for your interest in volunteerism, in Hands On Mississippi, and in the issues we face today but answer tomorrow.

OIL SPILL --

Hands On Mississippi is coordinating with local, State, and Federal agencies to monitor the pending Mississippi landfall of oil from the Gulf of Mexico. Oil spill volunteer opportunities will be posted when made available. Persons interested in volunteering immediately are encouraged to work with our office on current projects related to green space and blue way management such as debris removal. Persons also are encouraged to visit the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service www.mcvs.org for oil spill and other disaster updates.

Hands On Gulf Coast is now Hands On Mississippi! Our many years of service since Hurricane Katrina have demonstrated a community need beyond the Gulf Coast and beyond recovery. It is our honor and privilege to work with our partners and affiliates in expanding service and volunteerism, and we look forward to forging new relationships in the years to come. We also thank our alumni, volunteers, and partners for forging the path and for creating tangible results through hard work and dedication.
