HUD Supportive Housing Program This program is designed to assist homeless persons with a mental illness to
become self sufficient in permanent housing. Statistically it has been proven that at least 6 months of
assistance and case management increases the likelihood of not becoming homeless again. Participants must
agree to a program of drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation. Clients are case managed to assist with reaching goals
such as receiving Medicaid or disability benefits, obtaining a job, getting set up to receive food stamps and
needed health care. HUD Homeless Prevention and re-Housing Program Financial assistance for short and
medium term rental assistance, security deposits, utility deposits, utility payments, moving cost assistance for
homeless prevention and housing for homeless families and individuals. PATH - Projects for Assistance in
Transition from Homelessness Outreach services are provided to individuals who are homeless suffering from a
mental illness or co-occurring serious mental illness and substance abuse. 31% of those enrolled had a co-
occurring substance abuse disorder. MHAMS staff provides assistance to obtain income support services such as
housing assistance, mental health benefits, veteran's benefits, food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, supplemental
income benefits, food and other resources. We are able to provide short-term subsides to defray rent and utility
costs for those that have received eviction or utility termination notice. Opal Smith Day Support Center A
psychosocial rehabilitation center of structured activities for adults that aims to improve social adaptation and
daily living skills as well as alleviate such psychiatric symptoms as confusion, anxiety and withdrawal. The
Center strives to be a place to feel safe, get compassionate care and education, receive assistance with needed
resources, receive hot meals, participate in peer support groups, develop social skills and build on existing
strengths, serving as a primary empowerment tool. 25 people per day x 3 days per week x 52 weeks, with some
attending routinely. Per year approximately- 3,900 breakfasts; 3,900 lunches; 1,300 art projects 12,480 miles a
year to transport to/from Center in our 15 passenger van (40 miles each day) Caregivers Over the Age of 55
Raising Children The purpose of this project is to give caregivers the support that they need to become stabilized
and productive in their role as a caregiver. Individual and group therapy meetings, information and resource
assistance and education comprise the opportunities that can be available through this program. Senior Outreach

Think Again Network Mental Health Association of MS has partnered with the Mississippi Department of Mental
Health as a member of the Mississippi Think Again Network to help people change the way they think about
mental health and shatter the silence around suicide.
